Lighting Standards and Certifications

Lighting standards and certifications come in many forms, and this article aims to help you understand these different standards. It will cover IES LM-79 and IES LM-80, as well as the CSA Group, ETL, and more. These standards will help you decide which type of lights you should purchase for your home or business. Hopefully, this article has helped you make the right decision for your lighting needs.

LM-79

For LED products, LM-79 testing/certification is crucial to ensure quality and performance. This test determines the output lumens of a light source in terms of color, luminous efficacy and total luminous flux. LM-79 certification also helps determine its colour rendering index. In some cases, the LM-79 test will also include other measurements that will be necessary for LED product certification.

The LM-79 test/certification method measures the total lumen output of a lighting system, including lamp, ballast, driver, thermal management, and other components. While the LM-79 test/certification method is largely accepted and relied on by lighting manufacturers, its limitations make it an insufficient standard. Fortunately, Elite Photometric Testing Laboratory is an ISO 17025-accredited and DesignLights Consortium-approved LM-79 lights testing/certification laboratory. Elite's expert engineers, responsive scheduling, and high-quality testing results are just a few of the benefits of working with us.

IES LM-80

In order to achieve compliance with the IES LM-80 standard, lighting manufacturers must submit the LM-80 light-devastating test data to one of the accrediting bodies. The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) has approved two different testing methods. The first, the LM-79 test, measures the lumen depreciation of solid-state lighting sources. Both tests are conducted in EPA-recognized laboratories. This method is also used for DOE ENERGY STAR(r) program qualification. For GREEN CREATIVE products, the IES LM-80 test is conducted at a laboratory that is EPA-recognized.

Another test, the LM-80 test, uses three sets of samples connected to a power source for a specific number of hours. LEDs are tested at specific temperatures. The test for 55oC LEDs is also used to compare data with the 85oC test. This test is crucial to determine the performance of LEDs in various environments. A single LM-80 test is only valid for three-year life, but it is also used for early qualification for the DOE's ENERGY STAR program.

CSA Group

The CSA Group is leading the industry in lighting testing and certification. It has opened a Lighting Center of Excellence in Irvine to enhance its lighting evaluation capabilities. The lighting evaluation services at the new facility will include performance, safety and IP testing, among other services. All services are accredited to multiple local and international standards. This is just one of many services offered by the CSA Group. A list of services is available below. A representative from CSA Group will be at the Lightfair event to speak about their services and certification programs.

The CSA Group has over 30 laboratories and offices worldwide. Its certification mark can be found on billions of products around the world. There are offices in Canada, the U.S., Europe, and Asia. The CSA Group is similar to Underwriters Laboratories, a company that performs product testing and certification. It focuses on ensuring that light fixtures are safe for people and the environment. The company is the most recognized horticultural lighting certification body in the world.

ETL

ETL marking or certification is a standard that specifies that a product has been tested and meets a specific set of safety standards. The ETL mark is more common and easier to obtain than UL certification. The UL certification is the most respected and widely accepted safety certification. Both labels are required by law and protect the consumer from hazards. Unlike the ETL mark, which outlines the standard of an individual product, UL listing entails a thorough testing process.

In many industries, lighting products must meet certain standards to stay safe for consumers. To avoid this, ETL lights must be certified. The UL and ETL markings are both on the outside. The UL mark signifies compliance with flammability and fire safety regulations. ETL lights must meet the highest standards in order to be sold in the U.S. and Canada. A product must also meet the standards of both countries to be certified.

ALECP

ALECP Lights Testing and Certification is required for airport lighting equipment. These third-party bodies evaluate products for compliance with the FAA's AC 150/5345-53D specifications. Once approved, the ALECP Lights Testing and Certification provides a Certificate of Conformance to the manufacturer. The FAA requires a variety of products to be certified, including lights, wind cones, and isolation transformers.

This certification also applies to elevated lights. The baseplates are not separate and are certified with the light itself. The ALECP Lights Testing and Certification is an excellent resource for lighting companies, government agencies, and other interested parties. ALECP certification is recognized internationally and offers numerous benefits. In addition, this certification is a step toward increasing energy efficiency. ALECP lights are approved for use in public and private lighting systems, including in hospitals and other locations that require a level of security.

Damp locations certification

Damp locations certification is a requirement for lighting in wet and humid locations. These conditions can occur both indoors and outdoors, and include condensation of moisture on electrical components. Lighting fixtures that are rated for damp locations can safely be installed in these environments and remain trouble-free. But they are more expensive than lights that have dry locations certification, as they require more sophisticated construction. And if you're not sure if your lighting needs to be certified, here are some things to consider before buying it.

Lighting fixtures and ceiling fans that come with damp ratings can protect against damaging moisture buildup. These are usually required for damp locations such as bathrooms, basements, laundry rooms, and saunas. In addition, outdoor fixtures and ceiling fans must be protected and covered to prevent water from damaging them. But how do you know whether your fixtures are damp-rated? Here are a few examples:

Energy Star certification

LED and compact fluorescent lights are common types of lighting that have earned the Energy Star certification. These products are energy efficient and comply with stringent standards set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. These lights also comply with strict guidelines to ensure human health and the environment. If you're wondering how to find Energy Star certified bulbs and lights, read on. The following information will help you choose the best products. However, be sure to check with the manufacturers' warranty policies before purchasing.

In order to obtain an Energy Star certification for a light, the light must have at least 170 degrees of radial flux. This means the light must be of equal intensity on all sides of the product. It should also have long life and robust performance. In order to get a product certified as Energy Star compliant, check whether it has been independently tested by a third party accredited by the EPA. The EPA will pick up on a product's certification if it passes all these tests.

Exit signs

Before a sign can undergo certification, it must be tested. To determine the effectiveness of an exit sign, it must meet a set of requirements. These requirements are laid out in the National Electrical Manufacturers Association's (NEMA) standard called Exit Sign Visibility Testing Requirements for Safety and Energy Efficiency. The test procedure requires illuminated exit signs to operate for up to one and a half hours on battery power. A self-testing exit sign is the most convenient and cost-effective method for a company to meet compliance requirements.

There are several NFPA standards that must be met before a sign can be certified. NFPA 101 outlines the requirements for exterior illumination, including placement and visibility. An externally illuminated sign must be illuminated with at least five foot-candles of light to be legible both in normal and emergency modes. The DOE does not require that exterior lighting be adequate in the case of illuminated exit signs, however. The local AHJ is the best source of information regarding compliance with these standards.

Emergency lighting

Emergency lighting is a vital safety component of any building and needs to undergo regular inspections and tests to ensure it is safe. In addition, annual inspections are mandatory for emergency lighting. You should consult a certified professional for a thorough examination. There are many different companies offering this service, each of which should be contacted for more information. In addition to emergency lighting certification, these companies also offer annual inspections. The costs of emergency lighting certification vary depending on the type of system, but there are many benefits.

First, emergency lighting testing/certification involves performing a full test on emergency lighting, switching off the mains power supply and leaving emergency lighting on for a certain period of time. If the emergency lighting fails to operate for this duration, a new battery must be installed. The battery should have a sufficient amount of charge to operate for at least 90 minutes. UL requires that a new battery be installed if the emergency lighting fails the test. In addition, UK fire safety regulations require testing emergency lighting at least once a year and flick-tested at least once a month.
